By Richard Mabey
An oldie but a goodie. Foraging turns a walk into a treasure hunt, especially with young children, but it also ties you much more closely to the seasons and the very particular ecosystems within a short walk of your home. Mabey calls it an “intimacy with nature”, and we probably all need more of it. On a practical note, I probably wouldn’t want to rely on this book alone for mushroom foraging, as the illustrations are more decorative than diagnostic, but I love the anecdotes and historical titbits, and I return to this book again and again.
